Ground-breaking Stem Cell Surgery

As per an article in the British medical journal The Lancet, doctors from four European universities have successfully completed the first ever transplant of a human windpipe from the patient’s own stem cells. The transplantation has been carried out in such a careful manner that the new formed organ is not rejected by the patient’s immune system.

The patient Claudia Costillo had an acute shortage of breath due to a failing airway after a severe attack of tuberculosis. The stem cell surgery was performed in June in Barcelona, Spain after weeks of tedious preparation done at the universities of Barcelona (Spain), Bristol (England), Padua and Milan (Italy).

The surgery has indeed heralded a new era in the field of medicine.

Stay Healthy – Treat Insomnia

InsomniaInsomnia is a condition in which the patient is unable to fall asleep or stay asleep. It can occur once in a while in anybody’s lifetime or even become a chronic problem for some. Research findings claim that more women are insomniacs than their male counterparts.

As per US Department of Health and Human Services, insomnia can be overcome by:
• Talking in detail to your doctor about any underlying physical or mental health problems that might be preventing you from having a good night’s sleep.
• Observe and check (if needed) any daily routines or habits that can come in the way of a sound sleep. This includes drinking alcohol or coffee, as well as eating heavy meals just before going to bed.
• You could try sleeping pills for a short period of time. But only after discussing short-term and long-term benefits and risks involved in the same with your doctor.
• Try and learn relaxation techniques such as meditation, reconditioning and sleep restriction therapy.
